A method for controlling a digital photographing apparatus, and the digital photographing apparatus adopting the method are provided to store the decoded data of a header part in the memory of the digital photographing apparatus in reproducing an image file and displaying an image on a display unit, and use the decoded data of the header part stored in the memory in displaying the same image on the display unit, thereby improving the switching rate of the image displayed on the display unit. An image file comprises a main image data part, a header part, and a screen nail image data part. The main image data part has data about a photographed image. The header part has data about the manufacturer of a digital photographing apparatus, photographing date/time, shutter speed, an aperture value, a zoom rate, or a thumbnail image. The screen nail image data part has image data used in reproducing the image file and displaying an image on a display unit.
