The method involves spacing a pyrometer (7) from a spark plug (2). The spark plug has a middle electrode and an earth electrode (4). A light wave guide (9) and an electronic unit (8) focus a measuring spot (13) on the surface of the spark plug by the optics and the emitted radiation is measured on the measuring spot. The pyrometer is connected with an evaluation unit (15). The values measured by pyrometer is transmitted to the evaluation unit, and the evaluation unit determines the temperature on the spark plug from the measured values.
