This invention provides a fluorescent substance that can provide a light emitting device which has been practically improved in luminescence characteristics which are mainly color rendering properties. The fluorescent substance is characterized by comprising a compound represented by formula aM1O.bM22O3.cM3O 2 wherein M1 represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ba, Sr, Ca, Mg and Zn, M2 represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Al, Sc, Ga, Y, In, La, Gd and Lu, M3 represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Si, Ti, Ge, Zr, Sn and Hf, a is a value of not less than 8 and not more than 10, b is a value of not less than 0.8 and not more than 1.2, and c is a value of not less than 5 and not more than 7, and having at least one element as an activating agent selected from the group consisting of rare earth elements, Mn, Bi and Zn and incorporated into the compound.
