PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method in which manufacturing processes are drastically simplified and the risk of contamination is reduced by eliminating a magnetic layer removal process in a conventional physical magnetic layer processing type, and to provide a discrete track type magnetic recording medium superior in head floating characteristics in a magnetic recording medium having a magnetically separate magnetic recording pattern on at least one surface of a nonmagnetic substrate. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the magnetic recording medium includes a step of forming the magnetic layer on the nonmagnetic substrate, a step of forming a mask layer on the magnetic layer, a step of forming a resist layer on the mask layer, a step of transferring a negative pattern of a magnetic recording pattern to the resist layer using a stamp, a step of removing a part corresponding to the negative pattern of the magnetic recording pattern with the mask layer, a step of implanting ions into the magnetic layer from the surface side of the resist layer to partially demagnetize the magnetic layer, and a step of removing the resist layer and the mask layer, in this order.
