PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device capable of accurately detecting an S-letter signal by CAPA (Complimentary Allocation Pit Addressing) and a direction of the S-letter signal by the CAPA and detecting a CPA area and switching points of lands and grooves and to provide an address area detection method of the optical disk device. SOLUTION: A tracking error signal is formed from a signal generated based on a reflected light from an optical disk, an offset signal is added to the tracking error signal, data existing in an address area are detected from the signal generated based on the reflected light from the optical disk, the tracking error signal to which the offset signal is added is gated for a prescribed period and outputted based on the detection of the data existing in the address area and passage of laser light through the address area is detected by comparing levels of at least two signals having gate periods different from each other.
