PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance thermal efficiency by suppressing discharging of an unburned fuel from the neighborhood to a jet hole 21 for jetting torch flame in a sub-chamber type internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: In a compression stroke, the fuel is jetted from a cylinder direct injection fuel injection valve 12 toward a cavity 11 of a crown surface of a piston 4, and a fuel/air mixture is stratified in the cavity 11 (position apart from the sub-chamber 20). Slightly delayed from this, the fuel is injected from a sub-chamber fuel injection valve 22 into the sub-chamber 20, and the fuel in the sub-chamber 20 is ignited by an ignition plug 23. Further, the torch flame generated by igniting the fuel in the sub-chamber 20 is jetted from the jet hole 21 into a main chamber 5 and is made to reach the fuel/air mixture stratified in the cavity to burn the fuel/air mixture.
