A method of recognizing letters of bank checks in a bank check deposit/withdrawal machine is provided to improve a bank check recognition probability by using a scanner as well as an MICR(Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) reader to correct error codes. A bank check deposit/withdrawal portion(310) includes a bank check deposit/withdrawal sensor, a shutter, a shutter solenoid, and an insertion roller. An MICR reader(320) recognizes a serial number of the bank check and transmits the serial number to a controller. A scanner portion(330) scans a surface of the bank check and transmits compressed image data to the controller. A temporary storage(340) temporarily stores the bank check before the bank check is ejected through the deposit/withdrawal portion or transferred to a container(360). A printer(350) prints issuance dates on the bank check. The container contains bank checks therein. A driving motor(370) is rotated in one of clockwise and counter-clockwise directions and transfers a bank check. The controller(380) compares the serial number from the MICR reader with the serial number of the transferred bank check.
