PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly start detection of a moving amount of a coin having reached an image sensor when detecting the moving amounts of coins from an image picked up by an image sensor. SOLUTION: This coin sortor is provided with: a light emitting means arranged close to a coin passage for irradiating the coin passing through the passage with illumination rays of light; an image sensor for imaging the illuminated coin surface; a means for processing an image picked up at a predetermined frame rate, and for detecting moving amounts including the moving direction and moving distance of the coin, and for counting the number of passing coins from the result, and for deciding failure in the coin passing; and a means for selecting the optimal time from an exposure time classified and set in a plurality of stages in advance on the basis of the total sum of received light quantity by the image sensor when the image is picked up by the image sensor in the set exposure time as soon as the coin arrives, and for changing the set exposure time to the optimal exposure time.
