PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical unit and a head mounted display device which enables even a weak-eyesight person to see an image while suppressing an increase in the device size. SOLUTION: The optical unit 100 includes: a liquid crystal panel 110 for emitting image light; an aperture diaphragm 130 having a pin hole 131 at a focal position where video light emitted from the liquid crystal panel 110 is focused; a PBS film 140 having a tilt of approximately 45°with respect to the optical axis of the video light having passed through the pin hole 131; a 1/4λ-retardation plate 150 having a tilt of approximately 90°with respect to the optical axis of the video light having passed through the pin hole 131 and capable of converting the state of polarization of the image light having passed through the pin hole 131 from linearly polarized light to circularly polarized light; a concave mirror 160 capable of reflecting the image light having transmitted the 1/4λ-retardation plate 150 toward the side of the 1/4λ-retardation plate 150; and an eyepiece lens 200 capable of focusing the video light reflected by the concave mirror 160 on the eyeball.
