The invention relates to a fluorescent pigment comprising a) a melamine-formaldehyde polycondensation product, b) a distyryl biphenyl fluorescent whitening agent (FWA) of the formula (1), in which R<SUB>1 </SUB>represents hydrogen, chlorine or C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>4</SUB>alkoxy and M represents hydrogen, an alkaline or alkaline earth metal, ammonium or ammonium that is mono-, di-, tri- or tetrasubstituted by C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>4</SUB>alkyl or C<SUB>2</SUB>-C<SUB>4</SUB>hydroxyalkyl and, optionally, c) at least one additional fluorescent whitening agent, a process for its preparation and use thereof for the fluorescent whitening of paper, especially in coating.
