PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce or prevent deformation of a tip end of a succeeding recording paper which is separated by using a separation pad. SOLUTION: The paper feeder draws out a paper from a paper feed cassette, and separates and conveys by a paper feed roller and the separation pad driven by a paper feed motor, and conveys the paper to a further downstream side by a conveying roller positioned on a downstream side in a conveying direction of the recording paper from the paper feed roller. The paper feeder is provided with a deformation preventing means, wherein the deformation of the tip end of the succeeding paper 5b, which is generated when the paper 5 is separated by the paper feed roller 42 and the separation pad 43, and the succeeding paper 5b is held between the paper feed roller 42 and the separation pad 43, is prevented by stopping the paper feed motor and maintaining a stop status after a preceding paper 5a is bitten in the conveying roller 44 and is conveyed by the conveying roller 44.
