A method for scanning an image is provided to reduce a book copy time remarkably by minimizing a recognition process for recognizing a data area from the entire book area while improving the quality of prints by selectively scanning the data area of a book. A data area of each page is recognized more than once in a book copy mode by scanning the entire book area put on a scanning position. A data area value of each recognized page is stored while the data area is recognized more than once(S105). An average of the stored data area values is set as a basic scanning area by each page(S106). Prints are output by scanning only the basic scanning area for each book copy mode(S109). The data area is recognized by scanning the entire area of a book, finding an effective segment having a bigger value than a preset value among the segments placed on a scanned image, and recognizing the areas having the effective segment as the data area.
