A method for charging a battery comprises receiving a charging current having a substantially constant value at a terminal of the battery 214 until the voltage at the battery reaches a predetermined level. Thereafter, a charging current that has an exponentially decreasing value at the terminal is received at the battery such that the battery voltage does not exceed the predetermined voltage limit. While the charging current is generally decreasing, the charging current is periodically and temporarily stopped in order to measure the noncharging voltage of the battery. A semiconductor device 200 may be provided to supply the charging current.
