An apparatus and a method for preventing contamination of an exhaust gas recirculation cooler are provided to prevent harmful materials from increasing due to deterioration in the cooling efficiency by oxidizing particulate materials accumulated in a gas contact surface of an exhaust gas recirculation cooler. An apparatus for preventing contamination of an exhaust gas recirculation cooler comprises an exhaust gas recirculation pipe that re-circulates a part of exhaust gas from an exhaust manifold(11) to an intake manifold(12). A control valve(14) is installed at the exhaust gas recirculation pipe to control the amount of the exhaust gas. An exhaust gas recirculation cooler(10) cools the temperature of the exhaust gas introduced through the control valve. A direction control valve(15) is installed at the exhaust gas recirculation pipe to control the flow direction of the exhaust gas. Particulate material oxidation catalyst is coated on a gas contact surface of the exhaust gas recirculation cooler.
