The method involves arranging station units (4) in addition to a base station (3), where the units transmit radio signals, which are deduced at the respective positions of the units. A household appliance (1) is oriented in a room by processing the signals. The units are arranged in distributed distance to one another and/or to the base station in the room or in a set of rooms. The units are arranged at singular places of the room e.g. corners, projections, passageways or stairs. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating a base station and/or a station unit of an automatically displaceable household appliance e.g. floor dust collecting device.
