An apparatus and a method for data entry are provided to select sub-regions, in response to which characters in the selected sub-region are retained and the characters in the one or more other sub-regions are discarded, and the retained characters to be re-distributed between plural display sub-regions, such that the number of candidate characters is reduced in an iterative manner. An apparatus for data entry includes a controller(31), an audio codec(33), an RF transceiver circuit(35), a display driver(37), a keypad(5), a SIM card(39), a ROM(41) and a RAM(43). The audio codec is a conventional component which encodes sound signals received from a microphone(45) and forwards the encoded sound signal to the controller, and decodes an encoded sound signal received from the controller and forwards the decoded sound signal to a loudspeaker(47). The RF transceiver circuit processes a wireless RF signal detected by an aerial into a form suitable for input to the controller, and processes a signal from the controller into a form suitable for RF transmission using the aerial. The display driver receives a control signal for a desired display from the controller, and converts the control signal into a drive signal for a display unit. The RAM provides working memory for the controller. The ROM stores program routines and data which are used by the controller during operation of a mobile phone. The ROM includes a data entry routine to be executed during a data entry mode. |
