A retaining ring for a hydraulic cylinder is provided to be firmly installed for fixing cover members to a cylinder body having a cylinder chamber with an oval cross section. A retaining ring(28a,28b) is installed inside a hydraulic cylinder(10) in which a piston(18) installed in a cylinder body(12) with a cylinder chamber(20) is displaced by fluid pressure and fixes cover members(14,16) installed at ends of the cylinder body. The retaining ring for the hydraulic cylinder includes a bent part(84), a pair of straight parts(86), and a pair of expanding parts(90). The bent part is installed on an inner wall of the cylinder chamber to be bent along the inner wall of the cylinder chamber. The pair of straight parts are extended from both ends of the bent part and arranged in substantially parallel with each other. The pair of expanding parts are arranged at the straight parts and have hole parts to insert tools. The bent part and the straight parts are deformed to be spaced apart from the inner wall of the cylinder chamber by the tools inserted into the hole parts of the expanding parts.
