There is disclosed a process for producing composite components (particularly CMC components e.g. gas turbine engine component). The process entails producing a composite component 50 having a matrix material 48 (e.g. ceramic) reinforced with a three-dimensional preform 30. The process includes producing first and second sets 32 and 34 of tows 36 and 38 containing filaments. Each tow 36 of the first set 32 has a predetermined cross-sectional shape and is embedded within a temporary matrix material formed of a material that is not the matrix material or a precursor of the matrix material. The preform 30 is then fabricated from the first and second sets 32, 34 of tows 36, 38, in which the second set 34 of tows 38 are transverse to the first set 32 of tows 36. The adjacent tows of the second set 34 are spaced apart to define interstitial regions (20; figure 1 - not shown) therebetween. The cross-sectional shapes of the first set 32 of tows 38 are substantially congruent to the cross-sectional shapes of the interstitial regions (20) so as to substantially fill the interstitial regions (20). The first and second sets are of static and dynamic tows. The preform is heated to remove the temporary matrix on the first set to yield spacing between the first and second sets. |
