Lubricant formulations with improved antiwear properties

Lubricant additive concentrates contain a wear reducing agent comprising an amount of at least one hydrocarbon soluble magnesium compound (e.g. an overbased magnesium sulphonate detergent) effective to provide a reduction in surface wear greater than a reduction in surface wear for a lubricant composition devoid of the magnesium compound. The lubricant composition contains no more than about 0.05 wt.% phosphorus and is devoid of calcium detergents and organic molybdenum compounds. An objective is to reduce sulphur and/or phosphorus-containing antiwear agents which tend to poison pollution control catalysts.
