A device and a method for detecting rotation of an object are provided to perform various kinds of key inputs by using an imaging unit mounted on an electronic device, and enhance the space usability of the electronic device and make the electronic device slim by omitting a part of a usual keypad. A light source(214) is turned on at predetermined time intervals. An image sensor(218) generates lighted image data by capturing an object in a turn-on state of the light source and generates a non-lighted image by capturing the object in a turn-off state. An object extractor(231) generates first image data by comparing the lighted and non-lighted image data. A central point determiner(232) determines a central point of an object image and a background image by analyzing the first image data. An object determiner(236) calculates central point moving information and extracts area information corresponding to the central point moving information by using the central point moving information of the object image of the background image, and generates/outputs a function command corresponding to object rotation information extracted by using area information and more than one other area information, which is extracted before the area information is extracted. |
