A valve 10 includes a tubular valve housing 19, a valve seat, a valve element 22 and at least one sensor 52, 54, 56, 64, 66. The valve seat is located in a central passageway of the housing and defines a first portion of the passageway above the seat and a second portion of the passageway below the seat. The valve element controls flow through the valve seat. The sensor is fixed to the housing to measure an attribute that is indicative of a state of the valve. The sensor may measure pressure or temperature. The sensor preferably indicates whether the valve is open or closed. The valve may be a safety valve or a formation isolation valve. A system is also provided including a drill string, a valve and a sensor. Also disclosed is a method providing a valve in a tubular using a sensor to monitor the state of the valve. |
