[Class 120 (i)] [Also in Groups V, IV and VIII] Vulcanized rubber balata &c. containing embedded textile fibrous material is disintegrated between e.g. differential speed grinding rolls, at a temperature of at least 90‹ C. to allow separation of recovery of the fibrous material. In an example old tyre-carcase material is reduced to rough pieces, passed four times between rolls of speed ratio 7:4 and steam heated to 137‹ C. sieved to give a 53 per cent fraction of rubber crumb containing little cotton which fraction is again sieved, and a coarser, cotton-rich fraction which is suspended in water containing ¢ to 1 per cent of potassium-castor-oil soap through which air is bubbled for 10 to 15 mins. After standing, floating rubber crumb is skimmed off. Recovered cotton may be used as a filler for rubber goods or resins, or as cotton flock, or for making paper.</p> |
