A polyester binding material, suitable for use in the manufacture of plastic floor coverings (see Group VIII), is made by (1) reacting isophthalic acid with ethylene glycol, 1:3-butylene glycol, neopentyl glycol or diethylene glycol to form a polyester with an acid number of 10-40, (2) mixing the polyester with the pentaerythritol monoester of levulinic acid or the ingredients necessary to produce the monoester, so as to obtain a mixture containing about 50-80% of the polyester, (3) then adding to the mixture an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid containing at least 36 carbon atoms in an amount of from 40 to 70% by weight of the polycarboxylic acid based on the total weight of the mixture, and (4) heating this mixture at 150 DEG -225 DEG C. to form a gel. The preferred aliphatic polycarboxylic acid is a dimerized and/or trimerized fatty oil acid or a hydrogenation product thereof. The gel is compounded with fillers, and preferably also an accelerator having the formula, <FORM:0907917/IV(a)/1> where n is 1 or 2, x is 2-4 and R is selected from the group consisting of -CyH2y + 1 and <FORM:0907917/IV(a)/2> where y = 1-30, z = 1-5 and n and x have the above meanings. The whole mixture is then coated on a backing and stoved at 150 DEG -240 DEG F. In examples the filling composition comprises (a) finely-divided calcium carbonate, hydrated silica, fibrous talc and pigments or (b) finelydivided calcium carbonate, asbestos, finelydivided silicon dioxide and kaolin clay.
