An electronic endoscope system (10) having a scope section (100a), an ex vivo device (200) placed outside a living body, and a connection cord (100b) for connecting the scope section (100a) and the ex vivo device (200). The ex vivo device (200) and the connection cord (100b) have airtight, watertight pads (109, 110, 201, 214) and connection sections (151, 250) for causing respective pads to be close to and opposite to each other. For signal communication between a pair of opposite pads, the system further has a first modulation unit (106) for applying a voltage to one pad by modulating a signal and also has a first demodulation unit (202) for demodulating the signal from variation in potential of the other pad.
