<p>Furochroman derivatives are provided to improve characteristics of liquid crystalline display elements suitable for the employment in liquid crystalline medium, including negative dielectric anisotropy, large absolute value of the dielectric anisotropy and excellent stability against UV(ultraviolet), heat and electric tension. Furochroman derivatives represented by the formula(I) are provided to produce high quality of liquid crystalline display such as VA-TFT(vertical alignment-thin film transistor) display, wherein R^1 and R^2 are each independently H, halogen, -CN, -SCN, -SF5, -CF3, -CHF2, -CH2F, -OCF3, -OCHF2 or an alkyl group with 1 to 15 carbon atoms which is optionally substituted by CN or CF3 or by halogen, or by -O-, -S-, -CH=CH-, -CF=CF-, -CF=CH-, -CH=CF-, -CO-, -CO-O-, -O-CO- or -O-CO-O-; Y^1-Y^2 is >C=CH- or >CH-CH2-; L^1 and L^2 are each independently H, halogen, -CN or -CF3; Z^1 and Z^2 are each independently -CH2-CH2-, -CF2-CH2-, -CH2-CF2-, -CF2-CF2-, -CH=CH-, -CF=CF-, -CF=CH-, -CH=CF-, -C=C-, -COO-, -OCO-, -CH2O-, -OCH2-, -CF2O-, -OCF2-, or a combination of two of these groups; and n and m are each independently 0, 1, 2 or 3, and (n + m) is 0, 1, 2 or 3.</p> |
