An apparatus for detecting the subtitle of a video and a method thereof are provided to minimize the number of subtitle regions to be recognized by the verification of the subtitle regions, thereby maximizing speed in processing the subtitle. A method for detecting the subtitle of a video comprises the following steps of: detecting a subtitle candidate region in a predetermined frame of an input video(910); performing the SVM(Support Vector Machine) scanning of the subtitle candidate region to verify a subtitle region from the subtitle candidate region(920); detecting a character region from the subtitle region(930); and recognizing predetermined character information from the character region(940).
