A robot cleaner and a control method thereof are provided to discriminate if a sensed obstacle is climbable or not, and pass the obstacle with a climbable height without avoiding it by using a cross bumper. A robot cleaner comprises a case, an obstacle bumper, and a cross bumper(220). The obstacle bumper is installed to the case for sensing an obstacle to avoid by coming in contact with the obstacle. The cross bumper is disposed below the obstacle bumper for sensing climbable height of the obstacle by coming in contact with the obstacle, and comprises a sensing plate(222) disposed spaced away from the case, and coming in contact with the climbable obstacle, an arm(224) projecting toward the case from the sensing plate, a guide member(230) disposed on the case to relative rotation of the arm and moving of the robot cleaner, and a sensor(226) disposed on the guide member to sense the climbable obstacle by coming in contact with the arm.
