A internal accelerometer (12) coupled to gas turbine engine transmit a first identifier. An external accelerometer (13) coupled to gas turbine engine to transmits a second identifier that is different than first identifier. A signal conditioning computer (18) coupled to the accelerometers receives the first and second identifiers, and determines which of the internal and external accelerometers is connected to signal conditioning computer. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an accelerometer; and (2) a combination of vibration measurement system and gas turbine engine.
