PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide constitution that the tension of respectively separate belts 44, 45 can be easily balanced in an image reading apparatus of a flat-bed scanner type driving a full-rate carriage and half-rate carriage with the separate belts 44, 45. SOLUTION: There is provided an adapter plate 3 which supports a first follower pulley 1 wound with the first belt 44 and a second follower pulley 2 wound with the second belt 45, respectively freely rotationally. Also, there is provided a tension spring 5 which energizes the adapter plate 3, and a support plate 12 which is mounted with the adapter plate 3. The first follower pulley 1 and the second follower pulley 2 are varied in the positions of their axes and are supported to the adapter plate 3.
