PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily inspect the appearance of a sheet material having translucency. SOLUTION: In the appearance inspection system for inspecting the appearance of the sheet material having translucency, a plurality of monochromatic background plates of different color is disposed over the conveyance width in the direction orthogonal to the conveyance direction of an inspecting object, and the conveyed inspecting object travels on it. A camera, having a plurality of built-in linear color sensors, is installed at a position where each of the plurality of linear color sensors picks up an image on one of the plurality of background plates. An image processor inspects the defect of the appearance of the inspecting object, based on the image of the inspecting object picked up by the camera, when the same part in the inspecting object travels through the inspecting objects on the plurality of background plates.
