PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically adjust the illumination position of the light beam emitted from an endoscope to one point. SOLUTION: The electronic endoscope comprises a first light guide and an imaging element. The outgoing end of the first light guide is disposed at the distal end of the electronic endoscope, and the outgoing end of the first light guide is supported by an outgoing angle adjusting mechanism. The outgoing angle adjusting mechanism adjusts the direction of the outgoing end of the first light guide. The light beam is emitted from the first light guide only. The imaging element generates image signals and stores the signals in a second memory. The image signals stored in the second memory are transmitted to a marker detecting part (S200), and the coordinates of a marker are detected based on the image signals (S201). Then, the difference between the coordinates of the marker and the coordinates at the center is computed (S202). If the difference is not zero, the angle of inclination of the outgoing end of the first light guide is adjusted (S203 and S204). The adjustment of the angle of inclination of the outgoing end is repeated till the difference becomes zero (S200-S205). COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
