The controller (SG) has an evaluation circuit activating a passenger protection unit based on a crash signal. An interface is arranged for providing the signal. A sensor box (ISC) is connected to the interface outside of a vehicle (FZ). The circuit processes a signal of imaging sensors e.g. video sensors (V1, V2). The imaging sensors are connected to a housing of the controller. The housing has a fastening unit e.g. screw connections and bolts, for installation into a vehicle roof. The imaging sensors are configured such that the imaging sensors monitor a space outside of the vehicle.
