[PROBLEMS] To record video signals onto a recording medium such that the colors originally possessed by the recorded video signals can be faithfully reproduced by a reproducing apparatus. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] The user can designate, as a color space of video signals to be recorded, either an sRGB color space or an extended sRGB color space. A signal processing part (131) generates video signals (luminance signals Y and color difference signals Cb/Cr) corresponding to the designated color space. An encoding/decoding part (132) data-compresses these video signals by use of MPEG4-AVC standard to generate compressed video signals to be recorded onto a recording medium (135). A CPU (121) generates a color space identifier including information indicative of the color space designated by the user and causes an SEI NAL unit storing therein the color space identifier to be included in an access unit that is in the compressed video signals and that includes an SPS NAL unit. Thus, the video signals to be recorded onto the recording medium (135) are ones to which the color space identifier having the information of the color space of those video signals has been added.
