PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus capable of coping with a more drastic toner saving ratio and suppressing the deterioration of image quality as much as possible. SOLUTION: The color image forming apparatus includes an image processing unit for generating image reproducing data from input gradation values of color image data of a plurality of colors including black, and a printing engine for forming the image of the color image data by use of toner of a plurality of colors including black based on the image reproducing data. The image processing unit has a gradation change part which uniformly compares the input gradation values of a plurality of colors other than black with the ones at ordinary time so as to change them to restrained gradation values decreased by a first restraining rate and change the input gradation value of black into a restrained gradation value decreased by a second restraining rate smaller than the first restraining rate in a toner saving mode.
