PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical absolute rotary encoder capable of accurately detecting an absolute value at a rotation position with a small and simple constitution. SOLUTION: This optical absolute rotary encoder comprises an optical scale 4 having an absolute pattern indicating one absolute value by combination of a translucent section and light-proof section formed in one track 4a, light emitting sections 2a-2e for irradiating the optical scale 4 with light, and a light receiving section 3 for receiving the light that is emitted from the light emitting sections 2a-2e and passes the translucent section of the optical scale 4. The optical scale 4 and the light emitting sections 2a-2e establish a relation causing a relative rotation, the light emitting sections 2a-2e are formed of a plurality of light emitting elements, and the plurality of light emitting elements are arranged at constant intervals along the circumference of the rotation.
