Compositions for the spinning or casting of coloured articles comprise aqueous solutions of polyvinyl alcohol having dissolved therein one or more metalliferous azo dyestuffs, free from sulphonic groups, and having two molecules of dyestuff linked to one atom of metal. The metal may be chromium, cobalt, nickel or iron, and specified dyes are those sold under the Registered Trade Marks "Vialon", "Cibalan" and "Irgalan" and the trade name "Ortolan". The articles may be filaments, threads, fibres, monofilaments, tows and films, which may be stretched and subsequently acetalized, e.g. with formaldehyde or benzaldehyde. A colour concentrate may be made with a small quantity of the polymer, which concentrate may be injected into the colourless spinning solution.
