<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new adjustment program for pointing device and a pointing device, and to provide the adjustment program for pointing device and the pointing device which can conduct optimum setting according to the use environment. <P>SOLUTION: A pointing device 10 includes a controller 22 that instructs the position on the display surface of a monitor 34 by imaging, for example, two markers 340m and 340n as subjects for imaging placed at prescribed intervals near the display surface of the monitor 34. The width of the display surface and the distance between markers are obtained and the appropriate distance between the controller 22 and the monitor 34 is determined. Also the current distance between the controller 22 and the monitor 34 is calculated. The relationship between the current distance and the appropriate distance is announced by image display or sound output. For example an image which shows the appropriate distance and an adjustment image of which size varies in conjunction with the current distance are displayed on the monitor 34.
