A process for preparing a compound of formula (1) in enantiomerically enriched form, which comprises selective hydrolysis of the corresponding racemic compound (2) catalysed by an enzyme derived from a non-mammalian source and having esterase or lipase activity, wherein R is methyl or C<SUB>2-10 </SUB>linear or branched alkyl. The non-mammalian source is a preferably yeast from the genus Rhodosporidium, preferably Rhodosporidium toruloides, in particular Rhodosporidium toruloides CMC 103105 or CMC 103107
