The mechanism has a spring arrangement (16) for application of the mechanism against a synchronous adjusting movement of a seat support (6) and a backrest support (5). The spring arrangement has a helical spring, and an adjusting arrangement (24) is provided for a counter spring force of the spring arrangement. The adjusting arrangement has a latch, which is inserted into a winding channel (30) of the spring from an end of the spring. The spring is locked in an area of the channel against spring deformation, where the channel acts on the latch, and has variable engagement depths.
