The method involves vaporizing a surface material at a removal site by pulses of laser light, and dissolving the vaporized material in a liquid at an collection site. The liquid containing the dissolved material is provided to an ion source, where the liquid at the collection site has an open surface. The pulses of laser light are focused onto the removal site by a lens, where the ion source is an electrospray ion source that is a nano-electrospray ion source having a capillary. The liquid is covered by a permeable membrane and by a porous material.
