<p>Disclosed is a semiconductor optical device comprising a semiconductor light-emitting element or a semiconductor light-receiving element sealed with a sealing material, in which the sealing material is hardly deteriorated and which has a long service life. A semiconductor light-emitting element or a semiconductor light-receiving element is sealed with a compound comprising a cage-type silsesquioxane compound represented by the formula: (R<SUP>1</SUP>R<SUP>2</SUP>HSiOSiO<SUB>1.5</SUB>)<SUB>n</SUB>(BR<SUP>3</SUP>R<SUP>4</SUP>SiOSiO<SUB>1.5</SUB>)<SUB>p</SUB>(HOSiO<SUB>1.5</SUB>)<SUB>m-n-p</SUB> [wherein B represents a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group or a hydroxy group; R<SUP>1</SUP>, R<SUP>2</SUP>, R<SUP>3</SUP> and R<SUP>4</SUP> independently represent a functional group selected from a lower alkyl group, a phenyl group and a lower arylalklyl group; m represents a number selected from 6, 8, 10 and 12; n represents an integer of 2 to m; and p represents an integer of 0 to m-n] and a compound represented by the formula: H<SUB>2</SUB>C=CH-Y-CH=CH<SUB>2</SUB> [wherein Y represents a bivalent functional group], and subsequently the compound is polymerized.</p> |
