PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To alleviate a subject's feeling of glare by radiation of an AF assist beam without needing a special operation beforehand, and secure the precision of focusing on the subject as much as possible. SOLUTION: A camera 100 judges whether there is a chief subject in an adjacent position that an AF assist beam output by an AF assist beam lamp 105b sufficiently reaches before focusing starts in response to the half pressing of a release switch 104, and, if there is a chief subject in the adjacent position, prohibits the AF assist beam lamp 105b from emitting beams. That is, it is possible to prevent the chief subject in the adjacent position from feeling glare due to radiation of an AF assist beam without a photographer performing a special operation before starting automatic focusing (before half pressing a release switch 104).
