PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-carbon steel wire having excellent wear resistance obtained without causing breakage at wiredrawing and by an approach different from a method previously proposed by the inventors. SOLUTION: This high-carbon steel wire has a composition containing, by mass, 0.85 to 1.2% C, 0.5 to 1.5% Si, 0.1 to 0.8% Mn and 0.05 to 1.5% Cr, wherein the total area ratio of globular cementite having the equivalent circle diameter of 0.2 to <2.0μm and the aspect ratio of <2.0 is 5 to 20%, and the total area ratio of coarse cementite having the equivalent circle diameter of≥2.0μm is <1%.
