The present invention is directed to a method of treating a lack of normal breathing control including the treatment of apnea and hypoventilation associated with sleep, obesity, certain medicines and other medical conditions. In an aspect, the invention is directed to treating disordered control of breathing by administering an composition comprising a single compound which treats lack of normal breathing. In another aspect, the invention is directed to treating disordered control of breathing by administering an composition comprising a combination of two or more compounds, at least one of which treats lack of normal breathing.
