A service area searching device of a portable terminal and a method thereof are provided to demodulate a receiving signal through a wideband communication network, only when it is decided that the terminal is located in a region capable of using the wideband communication network, by using strength of the receiving signal, thereby solving a power consumption problem. A controller confirms RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indication) of a WiBro(Wireless Broadband Internet) signal(201). The controller instructs an RSSI unit to confirm whether a portable terminal exists in coverage of a wideband network signal capable of using a WiBro service(203). If so, the controller operates a wideband communication unit(205). The controller confirms whether a signal received by the terminal is a substantial WiBro signal(207). If so, the controller performs a service using the received WiBro signal(209). |
