PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for lighting discharge lamp capable of readily and performing initial setting with a lighting current, with high accuracy. SOLUTION: A lighting current control means 10 comprises a comparison means 30 which compares the lighting current detection signal with an initial setting reference signal or lighting current setting reference signal, and a drive means 32 for driving and controlling a lighting circuit 6, based on the comparison output signal from the comparing means 30. At the exchanging of a discharge lamp 4, when a light quantity control is switched to lighting current control by a control switching means 16, the initial setting reference signal, from an initial setting reference signal generating means 28, is inputted in the comparison means 30; and thereafter, when the lighting current control is switched to light quantity control by the control switching means 16, the lighting current setting reference signal, from a lighting current setting reference signal generating means 36, is inputted to the comparison means 30.
