A play method and a play apparatus, a program, and a recording medium are provided to output a stereo audio signal without abnormal sound regardless of the supply of necessary stereo process information. A play apparatus includes a band division unit(44), a stereo processing unit(45), a band synthesis unit(52), and a control unit. The control unit carries out a stereo process based on stereo process information obtained by necessary stereo process information. A playback method comprises the steps of: outputting stereo audio signals using the monaural audio signal if no necessary stereo process information is supplied; starting updating stereo variables within filters, and outputting the stereo audio signals using the monaural audio signal until all the state variables are updated, if necessary stereo process information is supplied; and performing the stereo process based on stereo process information acquired by the necessary stereo process information, on the monaural audio signal to generate and output stereo audio signals, if all the state variables within the filters are updated.
