A putter with a face having grooves of different depth

A putter head includes a face 3 having a first set of parallel grooves 4 and a second set of grooves 5 which differ in depth from the first set. Preferably the depth of the first set is between 0.03-1.2mm and the second set is between 0.01-0.3mm. Preferably the ratio of width W to pitch S (Fig 3) of the first set of grooves is between 0.5 and 2.0. The grooves may be U shaped or rectangular in cross section and the first and second set of grooves may extend in different directions. The second set may be arched. The face on which the grooves are formed may be an insert made from a metal and resin, rubber or elastomer laminate.
