A modular camera has a chassis module 124, a camera module 126 removably received by the chassis, an illumination module 128 removably coupled to the chassis and a passageway or channel 244 cooled by a fan. An illumination module 128 has a back wall, with a light source, wherein the illumination module is removably coupled to the chassis module 124 so that the illumination module back wall is spaced apart from the chassis module back wall. A communication module 130 is removably coupled to the chassis module, completing the cooling channel.
