PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a passive safety device control system that can work more desirably according to the status of crashes than existent systems, and a soft crash detecting method. SOLUTION: In the event of a soft or less severe crash, longitudinal deceleration Gs of a vehicle body once rises and falls before surging up again. The time derivative of the deceleration dGs/dt fluctuates in accordance with the fluctuation of the deceleration Gs; the first maximal value dGmaximal appears against the initial rise/fall of the deceleration Gs and a larger time derivative value than the first maximal value dGmaximal appears later. Plotting the time derivative dGs/dt as a function of the deceleration Gs shows that the first maximal value dGmaximal is the maximal value of the time derivative dGs/dt when the deceleration Gs on the rise falls into an initial decline. Multiplying the first maximal value dGmaximal by a constant provides a threshold dGfire. A value on the time derivative dGs/dt in excess of the threshold dGfire results in a determination of a soft crash, which in turn inflates an air bag at a high rate. |
